I’m sure it’s just upsetting to Kevin when so many players do find SC so unpleasant.
So, I think Kevin’s point is that if he encourages more players to bring SC, we’ll see how much fun they are to play with and against and how most of them aren’t that broken. He knows that some SC are OTT just as he knows that some armies and characters can be OTT. He’s certainly not trying to promote armies that aren’t fun to play against or armies that make you sick to your stomach when you have to play against them (no one will be happy if they have to play Morghur). Kevin is the knoblar king after all.
Admittedly, I play Khorne Demons and I’m not a good judge of what’s fun to play since I’ve been relying on my crutches for the past 6 years or so. But I play my army with or without SC because I want to have fun (and there’s nothing more fun than a BT). You shouldn’t worry, if I add Skulltaker to my army it won’t be as hard.
I don’t want to get into the debate about SC any further but I did want to acknowledge that Skulltaker isn’t “overpriced”. I think Karanak and Scarbrand are for sure but Skulltaker is about right. My reasoning:
Skulltaker/Jugg versus a Herald/Jugg with AoK and Firestorm Axe is strength 6 vs 7 (both flaming) attacks, MR 2 vs 1, both 0+ AS and Skulltaker has his wonderful killing blow in challenges. Both have hatred but the Herald has the Locus. Skulltaker is 200 pts and the Herald 190. I’d take the Herald 9 times out of 10 because of his strength 6 versus 7. You might think Skulltaker’s special ability KB is great but really how often to you get into challenges with other than man-size characters? I also have a BT to deal with them anyway.
I think Skulltaker’s best attribute is his MR 2 (since the Khorne Herald cannot take a Collar of Khorne and improve his MR) since the Khorne Legion has to rely on its MR (a lone herald in a chariot with MR 1 is a major target.) For my 2250 point allocation I think the BT fulfills Skulltaker’s role add a Herald in a Chariot (or 2) you have a better mix (although Big Al demonstrated that having 3 heralds on juggs with 0+ AS and St 7 works fairly well - most of the time.)
